They get seized to the end of the crankshaft, and need to be pried off or worse, pulled off. If you are having trouble removing this gear, we have had to drill a hole into it, and thread it, then use a bolt and slide hammer to pull it off in the worst case scenario but we've done hundreds, and that's a very small percentage.
