While fatigue affects about 1/3 of the general population [80], the chronic fatigue syndrome, defined as fatigue lasting longer than 6 months, occurs only in ~ 1% of the general population [81, 82] and is usually associated with impaired memory, cognitive deficits, muscle and joint pain, headaches, non-restorative sleep, post-exertional illness as well as psychological issues [83,84,85]
